One of the most unique voices in Québécois cinema, Robin Aubert has flirted with genre before. With his latest, he plunges in head- (and brains-) first — though, as one might expect, this riveting zombie film is informed as much by Aubert's own obsessions as it is by established conventions. Les Affamés is punctuated by gallows humour and moments of twitchy surrealism — much of it propelled by the compulsive behaviour of the zombies, who spend most of their time in a trance. As in Aubert's earlier anti-pastorals, the Quebec countryside is a playground for a cultural and historical id where a society's most sinister impulses and most repressed traumas enjoy free rein. And, as with the best zombie movies, Les Affamés is partly about politics and partly about a fear of the masses overpowering both individuals and minority groups — something that can happen even in the most idyllic locations.

Le cinéaste Robin Aubert, dont la voix est l'une des plus singulières du cinéma québécois, s'était déjà intéressé au film de genre. Mais avec son dernier long métrage, une captivante histoire de zombies, il y a vraiment plongé tête première. Porté par les obsessions du réalisateur et l'étude des normes qui régissent ce type de film, Les Affamés est ponctué d'humour et de moments surréalistes, la plupart du temps provoqués par le comportement compulsif de zombies en transe. Tout comme dans les précédentes réalisations " antipastorales " d'Aubert, la campagne québécoise devient un terrain de jeu pour explorer l'identité culturelle et historique, car les impulsions les plus sinistres et les traumatismes les plus enfouis de la société y ont libre cours. Et, comme les meilleurs films de zombies, Les Affamés porte aussi sur la politique et sur la crainte que la masse ne triomphe contre l'individu ou les groupes minoritaires. Une situation qui peut se produire même dans les lieux les plus paradisiaques.
