HANK WILDING'S JOURNAL: There has been an abundance of juvenile Five-lined Skinks on and around my patio this summer. When spooked, which is every time ole Hank steps out the door, they run at incredibly fast speeds under pots or into crannies in the brickwork.

This juvenile discovered a moth (that I believe was already dead) on a windowsill, and seemed to be having a fine time dismembering it via vigorous shaking and biting. At last, he separated the thorax from the abdomen, which he proceeded to gulp down whole.

Gorged, he tried to squeeze into a crack in the bricks, only to get stuck for a moment, with his vivid blue tail — is there another blue in nature so beautiful? — and legs flailing in the air most comically. After a few desperate seconds he managed to ease his entire body into the hole … and no doubt took a nap.

The Five-lined Skink is among the most common here in Georgia and the Southeast. It shares many characteristics with its cousins, the Southeastern Five-linked Skink and the Broadhead Skink. The best way to tell the difference is by looking on the underside of the tail. The middle row of scales on the Five-lined Skink and the Broadhead is enlarged. On the Southeastern Five-lined Skink, the scales are all about the same size.
